Ards Cultural Identity

Press Release

Every generation has its songwriters who tell stories of the Ards Peninsula and its people and places. Contemporary songwriters tend to sum up their thoughts in a three-minute song while folk songs of the past have been much longer, often recording important events in history or telling tales of love, war and travel to foreign lands. A special night has been arranged by Panarts community arts group to celebrate the many talented songwriters who have written about the culture and traditions of The Ards. On Friday 28th May 2004 ‘Song Traditions in the Ards’ will take place from 7.30pm in The Strangford Arms Hotel, Newtownards. Colin Magee of Panarts explains:

‘ We’re very excited about this event because it’s an opportunity to hear songs written about different lifestyles and places on the Ards Peninsula. The one-hour workshop at 7.30pm will allow people to hear different lyrics and to talk about song writing skills. At 9pm we have organised a concert performance of songs written by people who have an interest in the Peninsula. Some of the songs could be classed as ‘folk songs’ while others will be performed by professional song writers who write in different styles. Who knows, we may even discover new songs written about the Ards and never heard before in public’

The event is organised by Panarts with support from the European Union Peace II Programme administered by the Ards Local Strategy Partnership. ‘Song Traditions in the Ards’ is open to members of the public and is free of charge, although there are only sixty places- so get there early.
